The Internet: the Dark Side of the Force

On its onset, the Internet was integral. Born in the US, it was appreciated by the worldwide research community. It was English-speaking and uniform and operated according to the Western standards of openness. While expanding, it was joined by an increasing number of nations, which were keen to demarcate their borders. That is to say, while in Spain you can share music and movies without a risk to be penalized, in France this would cost you Internet connection, and in China, it is no longer possible to use Google.
The presentation will highlight countries wherein the State overly vigorously regulates the Internet and on ways of censorship and limitations of citizens’ freedoms in the Global Net, and their ultimate consequences.
